Applying for your provisional licence

Before you can even get into a car and start learning to drive, you have to get hold of a provisional driving licence.

To apply for this, the easiest way is online using your Government Gateway ID. If you don’t have one or need to re-register, you’ll get an ID as part of your application.

Your licence should arrive within one week if you apply online.

You can also get the form from your local Post Office. If you want to start learning to drive as soon as you hit 17, make sure you apply early! To apply for your first provisional driving licence you must be at least 15 years and 9 months old
